We all know how Marti loved and cherished her children, but she also loved her shoes.

A long time ago, our youngest son, Nicholas, went to his first day of school. Marti got him dressed, fed and loaded on the bus. Nick was ready and excited—Marti was not. She was devastated when she called me at work, slipping into a depression contemplating a life without kids at home. I did my best to console her but nothing seemed to work, until I suggested she go buy a new pair of shoes. Her mood lightened immediately as she planned her day shopping for shoes.
